This is a year rich in novelties for the American company Garmin. A few months after releasing the very successful Fénix 7X Sapphire Solar, the giant of GPS navigation systems is back this time with the brand’s very first cycle computer to integrate solar technology: the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar. A top-of-the-range GPS, equipped with a solar charge which could, according to the brand, work up to 100 hours in a row. A monster of technology that we tested during a bikepacking outing in Occitania. On average, high-end bike GPS units have a battery life of 15 to 20 hours. A performance that is more than enough for ordinary mortals. On the other hand, if you’re a long-distance traveler, an ultra-distance runner or a seasoned bikepacker, you’ll probably need much, much more than that. To read its technical characteristics, the new Garmin Edge 1040 Solar could therefore be THE solution to autonomy problems. It is indeed supposed to operate for up to 100 hours thanks to its Power Glass solar glass positioned at the top and bottom of the screen (i.e. on approximately 20% of the screen). Enough to power the on-board rechargeable battery directly during exercise, according to the manufacturer. 100 hours of autonomy, really? In reality, these 100 hours of autonomy are not always effective. Indeed, for the GPS to have such a capacity, Garmin specifies that it must necessarily operate in battery saving mode but also benefit from a certain ‘intensity of sunshine. In other words, depending on the region in which we are located, it will not always be easy to obtain a suitable solar recharge. Still, during our test, the autonomy proved to be amply sufficient for our 500 km course, a short tour of the Hérault. And this, without the need to connect the device to an external power supply. In terms of figures, with four days of good weather, we gained on average 1h20…
