Memtest86 is a free, standalone memory test software for x86 and Arm computers. It boots from USB sticks to test your computer’s RAM for faults, using algorithms that have been in development for over 20 years.

Unreliable RAM can cause a host of problems. Data corruption, crashes, and other unexplained behavior. Bad RAM is one of the most frustrating computer problems because the symptoms are often random and difficult to pinpoint. MemTest86 can help diagnose faulty RAM (or rule it out as the cause of system instability).

MemTest86 is used for industrial (PC/CPU/motherboard/RAM manufacturers) and consumer (system builders, overclockers, computer enthusiasts) use.

MemTest86 supports all current technologies:

  • 13 different RAM test algorithms – including row hammer fault detection*
  • All supported RAM types (DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, DDR5, SODIMM, XMP, ECC)
  • Automatic boot from USB or network (PXE) boot*, without the need for DOS, Linux or Windows
  • Optimized for UEFI-based x86/ARM systems
  • 64-bit native code (since version 5)
  • ECC* error detection and injection
  • Secure Boot verified – Code signed by Microsoft
  • GUI with mouse input
  • Record logs and create customizable HTML reports
  • Full test automation via configuration file
  • Memory blacklist support on Windows (badmemorylist) and Linux (BADRAM)
  • Multilingual support (Chinese, German, Russian, Spanish and more)

What’s new

  • Added a new configuration file parameter, ‘MAXCPUS’, to set the maximum number of CPU logical cores used for testing. By default, this value is 256 (Pro edition) and 16 (free version). This parameter can be set to a maximum value of 512.
  • Added a new configuration file parameter, ‘AUTOPROMPTFAIL’, to specify whether to display the test result and prompt for user intervention if the test fails, even when AUTOMODE is enabled
  • Added a new configuration file naming convention to separate configuration files based on memory size: GB-mt86.cfg
  • Fixed memory size calculation to use rounding instead of truncation
  • Display the PASS message box in yellow (instead of green) at the end of the test if corrected ECC errors were detected
  • Display an error message if no valid SPD.spd file was found when SPDMATCH=1
  • Display an error message if no SPD module was detected when SPDMATCH=1
  • Display error message and exit MemTest86 if CPU clock speed measurement fails on startup
  • Updated XML message to include CPU information and SMBIOS information sent to PXE server/management console
  • Added ECC support for Intel Tiger Lake H chipset
  • Added ECC support for Intel Rocket Lake chipset
  • Added ECC support for Intel Alder Lake chipset
  • Added ECC support for Intel Ice Lake-SP chipset
  • Added CPU information retrieval support for Intel Elkhart Lake chipset
  • Added support for DIMM temperature recovery (TSOD) for Intel Alder Lake chipset
  • Fixed issue with ARM64 CPU clock speed measurement due to disabled CPU cycle counter (PMCCNTR)
  • Fixed HTML report to show error bitmap in text when copying/pasting
  • Fixed Linux badram entries in HTML report to be aligned to page size (4096 bytes)
  • Fixed a parsing bug with the SPD.spd file when spaces appear at the end of each line
  • Fixed issues displaying information specific to DDR5 SPD RAM
  • Fixed support for a limited number of command line parameters in the free version
  • Fixed bug in overflowing text in SPD info screen
  • Fixed REPORTNUMWARN config file parameter not being written when saving config file
  • Serva PXE server configuration file included in the Site Edition package
  • Updated blacklist with Dell Precision 7760 screen display issues
