Cruyff wanted to associate Ronaldo, Zidane and Djorkaeff with FC Barcelona

Youri Djorkaeff reveals that in 1996, Johann Cruyff dreamed of forming a dream trio by teaming him up with Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo at Barca.

At 54, Youri Djorkaeff has held the role of “football adviser” at FIFA since July. In an interview with The Teamthe player returned to a highlight of his career: his aborted transfer to Barça.

Cruyff’s dream: a Ronaldo, Zidane, Djorkaeff trio

In the summer of 1996, Youri Djorkaeff left PSG to join Inter Milan. But during the 1995-1996 season, he was very courted by FC Barcelona of Johann Cruyff who dreamed of associating him with Ronaldo (then at PSV Eindhoven), as well as Zinédine Zidane, who played for the Girondins de Bordeaux and was on departure.

“I could have signed for FC Barcelona after PSG. My father and my brother, who represented me, saw Joan Gaspart several times. And my dream was to work with Johan Cruyff. Both wanted to take me. Barça even hoped to associate me with Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.says the former striker of the France team.

“But Cruyff was sincere. He called me to tell me that he might no longer be on the Barça bench (the following season, editor’s note). That’s what happened. Behind, I went to Inter Milan”he adds.

If Ronaldo will join Barça in July 1996, the departure of Cruyff, at the end of the 1995-1996 season, will indeed push Djorkaeff to join Inter Milan and Zinedine Zidane to commit to Juventus.

Chance of fate, Ronaldo will join Djorkaeff at Inter in the summer of 1997. But Barça supporters may regret not having seen Cruyff’s dream come true.
